UNMANNED UNDERWATER VEHICLE (UUV) is an umbrella term  often used in military and commercial circles. It is less often used by scientists/engineers, who tend to use more specific terminology.

OCEAN GLIDERS are designed for repetitive, multi-month missions. They use passive propulsion methods, relying on buoyancy and surrounding water motion.

AUTONOMOUS UNDERWATER VEHICLES (AUVs) use active (motorized) propulsion and do not need human input. Efficient and agile, some are capable of making decisions and/or adapting their behaviours to their surroundings.

REMOTELY OPERATED VEHICLES (ROVs) require a human pilot that sends commands via an umbilical/tether, which also supplies vehicle power

SEMI-SUBMERSIBLE AUVs have a surface-piercing mast, providing above-water communication and the ability to run an internal combustion engine.

AUTONOMOUS BOTTOM CRAWLERS are also known as ‘Unmanned Ground Vehicles’ (UGVs)

HYBRID REMOTELY OPERATED VEHICLES (HROVs) are capable of running missions either tethered (ROV-style) or untethered (AUV-style).
